TS Nicholas: Heavy Rain, Flooding Threat to Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi

On Monday night, Nicholas made landfall on Matagorda Island, Texas, as a Category 1 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph.

Nicholas has weakened over land, with maximum sustained winds clocking in at 60 mph Tuesday morning.

Currently, Nicholas is centered about 15 miles southwest of Houston, tracking northeastward at eight mph. Tropical-storm-force winds will impact areas as far as 125 miles from the center of the storm.

Nicholas is expected to track northeastward for the remainder of the day then will weaken to a tropical depression Tuesday night. Forecasters predict Nicholas will dissipate near the Louisiana/Mississippi border on Thursday.

A Tropical Storm Warning exists from San Luis Pass, Texas, to Rutherford Beach, Louisiana.

Rain + Heavy Winds Still in the Forecast

The heaviest rain is east of Houston across southeast Texas and southern Louisiana. Later on Tuesday, this heavy rain will focus more over south Louisiana, reaching southern Mississippi at night.

Moderate to heavy rain will continue Wednesday for southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi. When Nicholas dissipates on Thursday, rainfall will spread farther northeastward.

Southern Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast could get 5-10” of rain. Southeast Texas, central Louisiana, southern Mississippi, and the Alabama Gulf Coast will likely get 2-5” of rain. As a result, new concerns for flooding will be highest over southern Louisiana due to prolonged heavy rainfall through Wednesday.

In addition to rain, tropical-storm-force winds will gust at 40-50 mph in southeast Texas and southern Louisiana. Wind will become less of an issue as Nicholas weakens on Tuesday night, but there’s still a possibility for wind gusts of 30-40 mph on Wednesday. Stronger squalls could also result in a brief tornado Tuesday through Wednesday.
